Hi
A typical day on a Luxury Safari
"…And all the animals stopped drinking at the water – yes, all, quick electric ears, narrow eyes, their nostrils sniffing the motionless air between them and the patch of moving grass. Obviously it was the moment for the royal villain of this imperial piece to make his entry."
Sir Laurens van der Post
Timetables in the bush are kept by nature, and it is for this reason that we exit our crisp cotton sheets before sunrise. A quick helping of coffee or tea and perhaps a light snack to see us through until brunch, and then it is off on a game drive to catch the animals at their early morning antics.
Our ranger and tracker take us out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle giving each of us a wonderful vantage point. The excitement and expectation of what we may see fills the air as the seeking and searching begins in earnest.
Soon after leaving camp we are rewarded with a herd of Elephant crossing the road! Some time, and many encounters later a pit-stop under the shade of an acacia tree allows us to stretch our eyes out over the savanna and enjoy the refreshments provided by our guides. As mid-morning approaches and the heat of the African sun continues to rise, the animals retreat into the shade, and we decide to head back to camp.
On returning we are met with a sumptuous feast which signals the beginning of the daily assault on our waistlines! We excitedly discuss the morning’s viewing over a buffet brunch fit for royalty.
With full bellies and content smiles, we retreat into the folds of the camp, perhaps making a detour to one of the hides overlooking the water hole, or joining a ranger on a game walk to concentrate on the smaller wonders of the park, or cooling off in the plunge pool. But it is not long before the heat of the day and the early morning wake up call start taking their toll, and we scuttle off to the privacy of our suite for a siesta…
As the shadows start to form across the bushveld, a discrete knock alerts us to the offer of afternoon tea and another spread of delicious snacks. Re-fueled for our second game drive we are back in the safari vehicles and the hunt is on. With the majestic African sunset as our backdrop, we pause at a water hole teeming with game, to enjoy cocktails and refreshments as the sun sinks below the horizon. As darkness sets in, the night drive begins and we pursue a pride of lions who exhibit signs of a hunt. A couple of intense hours later we arrive back at camp wide-eyed and feeding off the exhilaration of our time in the bush.
After freshening up in our luxurious bathrooms, we make our way to the camp fire for aperitifs. The African night sky puts on a show while we enjoy a three course candle-lit dinner and a good bottle of South African wine. With many a wild tale weaved by our ranger around the camp fire and a lesson in African astronomy, the time comes when the rhythms of the bush send us back to our suite to prepare for a rest well-deserved…well we like to think so!
