Hi

Namibia

"The land God made in anger"

The latest must go travel destination in Southern Africa is Namibia.
This is a country offering a vast array of visual splendours and extraordinary landscapes that not many travellers would have seen elsewhere.

Namibia isn’t only about its awe-inspiring sand dunes. The dry south takes on many forms – mountains, plains and canyons. The wetter north is green and lush, and filled with wild game. But the desert defines the country and here you will find an absolute silence.

Suggested Itinerary to Namibia:
(Ideal for an ‘add on’ to a longer trip in Southern Africa)

Day 1: Fly to Namibia’s capital, Windhoek.
Board the Desert Express for a luxury train journey overnight to Swakopmund.

The Desert Express Train Journey has been carefully planned to take best advantage of Namibia’s dramatic sunsets and the breathtaking break of dawn across her endless landscapes.

The sheer luxury is evident from the moment you board the train that runs between Windhoek and Swakopmund on the coast.

Day 2: Swakopmund
This quaint, scenic coastal town on the Atlantic Ocean is a haven in the sea of red sand. Swakopmund is a wonderful place to explore with many activities and tours, including seal and dolphin cruises and wonderful fresh seafood.

Day 3: Swakopmund
Board a light aircraft for a flight across the Desert to Sossusvlei.
The Namib Desert, the oldest on the planet, is a most unusual destination of vast open spaces. This visual spectacle of endless red sand lying along the Atlantic Ocean, allows the visitor to really “get away from it all” and experience the wonders of nature from the air.

Day 4 & 5: Sossusvlei
This is the place in which to inhale deeply and bask in the infinite supply of blue skies and tranquil starry nights.

During a stay at a remote luxury air-conditioned desert villa, an excursion to the highest dunes in the world is what it is all about. At Sossusvlei the huge sand dunes dwarf the visitor and remind you of what wind and time can do to a landscape.

Other typical activities would include guided nature walks and hiking trails, exploring the dunes with 4x4 quad bikes, and as night falls, enjoying the Southern Hemisphere stars as the cosmos is brought to life through a telescope. A hot air balloon ride as dawn breaks over the desert is also not a bad way to start off another wonderful day in Africa!

Travel Tip:
The best time to go is between May and September, when the daytime temperatures are more bearable then the scorching summers and the air becomes crisp and clear.

Namibia’s capital, Windhoek is easily accessible from South Africa, Botswana and Victoria Falls for those wanting to combine a Namibian experience with possibly Cape Town and The Okavango Delta.

For those wanting to extend their stay in Namibia and explore this remarkable country more thoroughly, Etosha National Park is home to a large population of wild game. Called the ‘Place of Dry Water’ for its blinding white salt pans, it is austerely beautiful, and the unusual sight of many species of mammals and sometimes predators, drinking side-by-side at the waterhole, makes for remarkable photo-opportunities.

The rugged and majestic terrain of the ghostly Skeleton Coast is fascinating, as well as the Damaraland region with its dessert-adapted elephants. For hiking enthusiasts, the spectacular Fish River Canyon in the south is breathtaking.
