Cunene River Adventure - 11 Days in NAMIBIA
The Cunene River is one of the most adventurous river rafting experiences in Africa. Starting our tour from Windhoek, Namibia, we work our way through Etosha National Park for Big 5 game viewing in this remarkable landscape, to the Cunene River which makes up part of the border between Namibia and Angola. The Cunene River flows south to enter the northern Kalahari Desert; it passes through the Namib Desert before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.
Although there are many exciting rapids, this trip caters for those seeking an unusual wilderness experience on one of the remotest rivers in Africa. The charm of this participation safari is to be found in unique rugged scenery, fascinating flora, intriguing diversity of bird life and some great paddling. You will enjoy the white water of some exhilarating rapids, explore small islands and meet members of the Ovahimba tribe. The scenery is varied and plentiful considering that the river winds its way through a semi-arid region. Crocodiles are encountered on a regular basis but are usually shy and secretive.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek and meet up with the group and guides.
Day 2: Depart for Okaukuejo in the Etosha National park where you will overnight.
Day 3: Spend the day game viewing in the park, overnight at Namutoni camp on the eastern boundary of the park.
Day 4: After breakfast head North to Ruacana on the Cunene River. Your route takes you past numerous rural villages, larger towns and cultural centers which are inhabited by the Ovambos tribe, the largest tribe in Namibia.
Day 5, 6, 7 and 8: Rafts (or 2 man crocs) are used and everyone participates in paddling. You spend approximately six hours per day on the water and the distances covered depend on flow and wind conditions. Provisions are carried on the boats for a picnic lunch at midday. As you will be camping on the banks of the river, you meet up with your back-up crew each evening who will carry all the overnight equipment and welcome you off the river with a cold drink and continue to prepare the evening meals around the campfire on the river bank.
Day 9: The river breaks up into numerous streams as you paddle your rafts past islands to arrive at the picturesque and remote Epupa Falls in the afternoon. Here the group will camp beneath the palms. Hiking along the rim of the gorge provides for spectacular views of the falls.
Day 10: After breakfast the party heads south through the Kaokoland, traveling along the western boundary of Etosha. The group will reach Kamanjab in the late afternoon to camp overnight at a Cheetah Farm where they can view tame and wild cheetah.
Day 11: After breakfast, depart for Windhoek via Okahanja, renowned for its curio market. Arrive in Windhoek late afternoon.
