Paradise, Palm trees and cocktails - Mozambique

On the east coast of Southern Africa lies Mozambique - an African country with strong Portuguese and Arabian influences that are reflected in the architecture, cuisine and the happy people. Mozambique's greatest attraction is its magnificent 2500km/1560mile long unspoiled Indian Ocean coastline and exquisite offshore islands with remarkable coral reefs, translucent water and palm fringed, blinding white sand. And let me not forget - breathtakingly beautiful…

Mozambique has something for everyone, but it is the romance of its remote and luxurious islands in the far north that is the focus here. For those looking for something special, be it a destination wedding, honeymoon, anniversary, or a luxurious getaway with friends - look no further. The Quirimbas Archipelago consisting of 32 tropical coral islands stretching for 100km along the coast from Pemba to the Tanzanian border. A true paradise, offering an exceptional setting, luxurious accommodation and a host of wonderful activities.

Suggested itinerary of Northern Mozambique:

For a 7 day itinerary in the area:  Beach

Day 1: Fly from Johannesburg to Pemba in Northern Mozambique, and transfer to Pemba Beach Hotel and Spa overnight. Endless ocean views and striking architecture make this a wonderful gateway to the Lugenda Wilderness Camp and the private Quirimbas Islands.

Day 2, 3, 4: Transfer by light aircraft to Matemo Island, and immerse yourself in sheer pleasure… Stay in a beautifully appointed beach chalet only a few steps across the sand to the sea. Dive, snorkel, sail and fish, or just relax in your deck hammock while watching the dhows with billowing white sails move in the blue expanse of the Indian Ocean. Take a boat ride to Ibo Island for a cultural discovery of East African history - ivory, slaves and pirates.

Day 5, 6, 7: Transfer by light aircraft to Medjumbe Private Island - this tiny pristine island with its breathtaking coral reefs and unparalleled hospitality is world-renowned for barefoot luxury and privacy. Stay in one of only a handful spacious beach chalets designed to ensure privacy with beautifully draped beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, private plunge pools, and African designs throughout. Enjoy a private dining experience with limitless flavors of local seafood on the beach sand by moonlight.

For a 10 day itinerary in the area:  Beach & Bush

Day 8, 9, 10: Transfer to the Lugenda Wilderness Camp in the Niassa Reserve, Mozambique. Stay in one of just 8 beautiful safari tents with every possible comfort in this remote reserve. Enjoy high teas on the cool verandah and fireside boma dinners prepared by skilled chefs. Qualified guides will reveal wonders of this undiscovered region situated on the Tanzanian border.

Travel Tip:
Mozambique is a short flight from South Africa and combines very well with any South African itinerary such as Cape Town and a Wildlife Safari, for those wanting to end off their trip with a few days of rest and relaxation on a deserted beach…

Tours for Africa also specializes in all other areas of Mozambique, such as the Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Vilanculous, and the many options in and around Inhambane.

Happy travels :)
